How Stroke Counting Works
What standard does this tool use?
This tool uses stroke count data derived from the Unihan database (kTotalStrokes field), which is maintained by the Unicode Consortium. The data follows widely accepted stroke counting conventions used in modern Chinese dictionaries and education materials.
Why is this an estimate?
Stroke counts can vary between different standards, regional conventions, and font styles. For example, the PRC standard and Taiwan standard may assign different stroke counts to the same character. This tool uses a single count per character based on the most commonly accepted value, so results should be treated as estimates.
Simplified vs Traditional
The dictionary includes both Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters. However, the same semantic character may have different written forms (and therefore different stroke counts) in Simplified and Traditional Chinese. The tool counts strokes based on the actual Unicode character in your text, not its simplified or traditional equivalent.
Limitations
- Rare or archaic characters may not be in the dictionary and will appear as missing.
- Variant characters (异体字) may not all be covered.
- Characters outside the GB2312 basic set have lower coverage.
- Stroke counts do not account for calligraphic style variations.
