Hanzi vs. Character

Understanding the difference between counting Hanzi and counting all characters.

What is Hanzi?

"Hanzi" (汉字) refers specifically to Chinese characters — the logographic symbols used in Chinese writing, also known as CJK ideographs. Each Hanzi carries meaning on its own or in combination with others. Examples include 人 (person), 大 (big), and 学 (study). Hanzi does not include punctuation marks, spaces, Latin letters, or digits — only the Chinese characters themselves.

Example

学习中文
Hanzi: 4Characters: 4

All 4 symbols are Hanzi, so Hanzi count and character count are the same here.

What is a "Character"?

A "character" in the context of text counting means any individual symbol in the text — including Hanzi, punctuation (。,!?), spaces, Latin letters (A–Z, a–z), digits (0–9), and emoji. Character count gives you the total length of the text, while Hanzi count focuses only on the Chinese characters within it.

Example

你好,World!
Hanzi: 2Characters: 9

"你" and "好" are Hanzi (2). The full string also includes ",", "W", "o", "r", "l", "d", "!" — totalling 9 characters.

When to use Hanzi count vs. character count

Use Hanzi count when you need to know how many Chinese characters appear in your text — for example, tracking vocabulary for HSK study, measuring the density of Chinese in a mixed-language document, or checking how many unique Hanzi a student has used. Use character count when you need the total text length — for example, checking social media post limits, meeting essay length requirements, or comparing document sizes.

Examples showing the difference

The gap between Hanzi count and character count grows as your text includes more non-Chinese elements such as punctuation, numbers, and English words. A purely Chinese sentence will have nearly identical counts, while a mixed-language paragraph can show a large difference.

Example

2024年,我学了100个汉字!
Hanzi: 7Characters: 14

Hanzi: 年, 我, 学, 了, 个, 汉, 字 → 7. Characters include digits (2, 0, 2, 4, 1, 0, 0), punctuation (,, !), and Hanzi → 14 total.
