Counting Rules
Understand exactly how different types of characters are counted.
Does punctuation count?
Yes. Each punctuation mark — whether Chinese (。,!?、) or English (. , ! ?) — counts as 1 character. Full-width and half-width punctuation are each counted individually.
Example
你好!→3 characters"你" + "好" + "!" = 3 characters. The Chinese exclamation mark ! counts as 1 character.
Do spaces count?
Yes, by default every space counts as 1 character. This includes regular spaces between English words and any whitespace inserted in Chinese text. You can toggle spaces off in the counter settings if you prefer to exclude them.
Example
Hello World→11 characters"Hello" (5) + space (1) + "World" (5) = 11 characters. The space between the two words is counted.
How are numbers counted?
Each digit is counted as 1 character. A multi-digit number like "2024" is 4 characters, not 1. This applies to both half-width (0-9) and full-width (0-9) digits.
Example
2024年→5 characters"2" + "0" + "2" + "4" + "年" = 5 characters. Each digit counts individually.
How is English text counted?
Each English letter counts as 1 character, regardless of case. A word like "Hello" is 5 characters. This is different from word counting, where "Hello" would be 1 word.
Example
Hi 中文→5 characters"H" (1) + "i" (1) + " " (1) + "中" (1) + "文" (1) = 5 characters. Each letter, space, and Hanzi counts individually.
What about emoji?
Each emoji counts as 1 character. Whether it is a simple smiley 😊 or a flag 🇨🇳, each visible emoji symbol is counted once.
Example
你好😊→3 characters"你" + "好" + "😊" = 3 characters. The emoji 😊 counts as 1 character.
