In Chinese, a "character" (字) is a single written symbol — like 你, 好, or 吗. A "word" (词) is one or more characters that form a meaningful unit — like 你好 (hello) or 电脑 (computer). Unlike English, Chinese text has no spaces between words, so word counting requires smart segmentation. Use our Character Counter for exact character totals, or our Word Counter for estimated word counts with advanced segmentation modes.
Our counter gives you full control over what gets counted. Chinese characters (Hanzi) are always counted. Punctuation (both Chinese and English) can be included or excluded with a toggle. Spaces can be included or excluded separately. English words, letters, and numbers are counted in their own categories. Sentences are split by terminal punctuation (。!?.!?) and paragraphs by line breaks. File uploads (TXT and DOCX) are parsed locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
